On Rare Occasions, a Girl Has Better Ways to Spend Her Time than Blogging

Friday, while Peter and a couple of his Footnote homeboys rode Porcupine Rim, I hiked to Delicate Arch.

I love this part of the world. Achingly. Hopelessly.

Sign I'm old #762: I overheard a young woman say to the young man she was with, "It's sick how there's no one here!" and I thought, "But I love how it's not crowded," and "Hmm, does she mean that all this beauty is wasted on so few appreciators?" Then I remembered: sick=something good in Young Upstart Speak. I can't help it, when I hear the word sick, it sounds like a bad thing.

Saturday a group of nine of us (mostly Peter's coworkers) went into Dragonfly Canyon in Arches.

Peter's throwing and catching skills came in handy for getting backpacks, ropes, etc. across a series of potholes full of water. (Once citywide MVP in his baseball pony league, dontcha know.)
He wouldn't throw me across. I had to jump in.

First rappel, just after that last pothole.

Russell and Brent setting up the second rappel.
View from the top.
Walking down the wall.

I am sorry if this is making you ooze with jealousy. If I were reading this post instead of writing it, it would be killing me. I am totally buying flowers for Helen and my Dad for watching the kids so that I could go.

The whole group, after the beautiful hike the rest of the way out to Courthouse Wash. Russell, in the green hat, was our guide and the ropes expert. His wife Molli (in blue) carried a full sized pack of gear the whole way and washed the mud off of my feet with the last of their drinking water. Sure, we were all headed back into civilization and its plentiful water sources, but still.

I'm tooootally jealous of the destination and hikes, but not so much of the rappelling; I'd be too scared.

I'm jealous that you somehow wound up the athletic outdoorsy gutsy one. (I guess Suzy is, too). And that you have a tough husband to go with.

But I love you and I'm really glad you got to go :D

(And I do get to go camping in Escalante this weekend, so I'm slightly appeased)

I'm definitely not feeling sorry for you any more. Now I'm just feeling sorry for myself.

That looks like so much fun! We're going to hike into Havasu Falls this summer, which is something I've never done before, so this scenery makes me very excited! Glad you guys had a good time!

Krista, Havasu is high on my list. I had a trip there planned in the spring of 1993 with 3 friends, but the campground flooded that year, so we wound up going to Calf Creek in the Escalante area instead. It was a fantastic trip anyway, but someday I'm going to Havasu Falls.

Holy frickin sick. I've missed the posts, but this one almost makes up for your absence.

I am in awe of your adventerousness. I know it is a stretch at a word, but really, rappelling, jumping into potholes of water, rappelling. Perhaps taking the kids to Calf Creek Falls would be a fun hike to add to the summer hike list.

haha, um, It's with a BYU art group and a bunch of Liverpudlian art students (several of whom are mama's age or even older)... so I think it might be more sights and less hikes...
(I am afraid my exposure to Southern Utah lacks, so I'm still glad to go!) But let's go this summer :D

So I really am sick to my stomach. Oh, I do miss those carefree days.... how do I steal a few days in the desert, kid free?
I am so glad you got to experience that. Wahhhooooo!

So the last comment was left by melissa blackburn. I saw another melissa. How can you tell the difference?

Melissa B., I can tell the difference from your "blogger" profiles that your names link to and from your lowercase m. And speaking of kid free in the desert, how does Scotty feel about watching 6 children, ages 1.75 to 7 for a few days? :-)

Sammy Bobby, I think it's time to put down the peace pipe. Or whatever it is you're smoking.

Nice!! Russ was impressed that you didn't even squeal when splashing into that coooold pot hole. According to amazed eyewitnesses, you shrugged it off saying, "I've had worse."

I got to rappel 1,600' in Zion that weekend but didn't have to swim, so I'm not sure whether or not I'm more man than you.

P.S. Lili: be sure to let us know how all the rain affects your canvas this weekend! Maybe you'll invent a new genre.

Shaun, I'd love to say I'm especially gutsy/tough, but it would be a big fat lie. Honestly, the water wasn't all that cold. Certainly not mountain lake variety cold.

Last time I checked, I wasn't old, and I still associate the word "sick" with: #1, an illness or #2, something unpleasant or disgusting. It confuses me when anyone uses it otherwise.
Oh, and also: NO FAIR!
